The figure in this piece is derived from Antoine Watteau's painting, "Pierrot." He captures the bittersweet nature of the human condition. Namely the vulnerability, isolation, and the blurred line between performance and reality. I just love the comedians somber gaze, inviting us to reflect on the roles we play in life’s theater.
In my latest collage, I reimagine Pierrot with real butterfly wings, set against a celestial backdrop of the sun and moon. The butterfly wings symbolize the transformations we all go through and the fragility of existence. While the cosmic stage that he inhabits reflects the interconnectedness of our choices within the grand narrative of this wild and wonderful life.
Both Watteau’s original, and this reinterpretation, ask us to confront the beauty and impermanence of life. Pierrot reminds us that living authentically means stepping onto life’s stage, embracing the uncertainty of the script, and choosing our role in this play of existence. Now go out there and break a leg.
